Queensland's transmission network
Transmission lines transport electricity from where it is generated or stored to where it is needed to power our lives and industries. Transmission lines carry electricity at a high voltage, which allows electricity to travel long distances, fast.
Queensland's transmission network is owned and operated by Powerlink, a government owned corporation.
Transmission in Queensland’s energy transformation
New high voltage backbone transmission will be vital to Queensland’s energy transformation; moving power to where it is needed, when it is needed.
Queensland has passed new energy laws, which establishes two frameworks to help ensure Queensland has scale-efficient, timely transmission for the transformation. Read more about the Queensland Energy Jobs Plan and the Queensland (Renewable Transformation and Jobs) Act 2024.
These include the Renewable Energy Zone and Priority Transmission Investment frameworks.
- Renewable Energy Zones are areas that are strategically planned to connect multiple clean energy generators and deliver better outcomes for Queensland communities and industries. Read more about Renewable Energy Zones.
- Priority Transmission Investments will allow Queensland to identify, assess, build and fund the new transmission needed for the energy transformation as identified in the Queensland SuperGrid Infrastructure Blueprint. Read more about Priority Transmission Investments.
