What are the jobs in renewable energy?
Queensland’s renewable energy sector needs technically skilled workers to design, install and operate renewable energy systems.
It needs trades people and technicians to operate and maintain large scale wind, solar and battery assets as well as installers for home and business rooftop solar and batteries.
Queensland also needs highly skilled corporate professionals for community liaison, commercial trading and project management roles, just to name a few.

The Queensland Government has also launched the Clean Energy Workforce Roadmap. The roadmap provides direction to further develop Queensland’s highly skilled workforce to support the growth of the state’s clean energy industry. It identified 3 key areas of focus:
- build our future workforce by providing training
- partner with industry to mobilise our existing talent and transition and upskill where necessary
- prepare our regions for growth through workforce planning and building supply chain capability.
Boom in renewable jobs
Stephen Burt’s drilling business grew almost overnight thanks to contracts for renewable energy projects in regional communities. Previously Stephen’s business had been 100% focussed on the coal industry, but now 50% of his fleet is dedicated to the renewables sector. Traditional electricity generation jobs
Energy workers have been the backbone of Queensland’s secure and reliable energy system. Generations of workers in our traditional power generating assets have kept the lights on in Queensland and helped to build our state. Highly skilled regional jobs continue to be needed and the expertise of these workers is essential for Queensland’s energy transformation.
Workers in Queensland’s publicly owned coal-fired power stations are being supported through the energy transformation, through a Job Security Guarantee. This guarantee is backed by a $150 million fund which will help protect these workers.
Queensland Energy Workers' Charter
The Queensland Energy Workers' Charter (PDF, 1002.31 KB) is an agreement that creates an enduring framework to support and provide confidence to workers through the energy transformation. The Charter includes unions, employers and government and sets out principles and actions to support workers.
Interim Energy Industry Council
Under our Queensland Energy and Jobs Plan we are establishing a new Energy Industry Council. The council will provide advice to government on new opportunities and pathways for workers and their communities.
Unions, publicly owned energy businesses and government will be represented on the Energy Industry Council.
