Information for the hydrogen industry
Queensland has the potential to be a world-leading producer and exporter of renewable hydrogen. The state’s abundant solar and wind resources and our world-class deep-water ports, makes it an ideal location for large-scale hydrogen production.
With vast land areas suitable for renewable energy generation and well-established infrastructure for export, Queensland is well-positioned as a key player in the global hydrogen market.
We have invested more than $300 million to support industry development and to capitalise on emerging domestic and international renewable hydrogen opportunities.
Potential for growth
The Queensland Government welcomes investment into Queensland by hydrogen proponents and has been working to create the foundation for industry growth through:
- a review of the regulatory environment
- market analysis
- infrastructure investment
- community awareness
- the development of training pathways to equip the future workforce.
Renewable hydrogen assessment
To understand Queensland’s renewable hydrogen opportunity, a state-wide assessment was conducted to assess the:
- availability of land for hydrogen development
- suitability of port infrastructure
- resource potential within our renewable energy zones
- proximity to markets in Asia and beyond.
A summary of the study, Enabling Queensland’s hydrogen production and export opportunities report (PDF, 3027.44 KB), offers insights into both the opportunities and challenges that are being considered to develop a world-class renewable hydrogen industry in Queensland.
In particular, the study examined a range of ports along the Queensland coast for their potential in producing and exporting renewable hydrogen.

Hydrogen legislation
Growing a safe, sustainable hydrogen industry requires a clear pathway to development. Having an efficient, effective regulatory framework helps ensure economic, environmental and community benefits for Queensland.
Following a review of Queensland’s regulatory framework, the Gas Supply and Other Legislation (Hydrogen Industry Development) Amendment Act 2023 commenced on 4 April 2024.
The purpose of the Act is to establish a straightforward regulatory process for granting approval to build and operate pipelines for hydrogen and hydrogen carriers in Queensland.
Pipelines are key to hydrogen production and export as they transport hydrogen and other gases to where they are sold or used large facilities.
