Enabling Queensland’s Hydrogen production and export opportunities report
Queensland has the potential to be a significant producer and exporter of renewable hydrogen. The state has available land and water, world-class port infrastructure, resource potential within our renewable energy zones, and proximity to markets in Asia and beyond.
Our hydrogen future
Careful strategic planning is essential for the renewable hydrogen industry in Queensland to be developed at scale. That is why we have undertaken a state-wide study of Queensland’s renewable hydrogen production and export potential.
A summary of the study, Enabling Queensland’s hydrogen production and export opportunities report (PDF, 3027.44 KB), offers insights into both the opportunities and challenges that will be considered to develop a world-class renewable hydrogen industry in Queensland.
The study will be used as an important reference to guide the industry to grow sustainably, while balancing economic opportunities with environmental, social and cultural values.
As part of the study, the following ports have been examined for their potential in producing and exporting renewable hydrogen:
- Townsville
- Abbot Point
- Mackay/Hay Point
- Gladstone
- Weipa
- Cape Flattery
- Karumba
- Cairns
- Mourilyan
- Rockhampton
- Bundaberg
- Brisbane
Queensland Energy and Jobs Plan
The study supports a range of actions being delivered under the Queensland Energy and Jobs Plan.
The Plan includes a commitment of up to $15 million to supercharge, coordinate and further plan for hydrogen hubs in key locations across Queensland.
The $4.5 billion Queensland Renewable Energy and Hydrogen Jobs Fund has been established to allow energy government-owned corporations to increase ownership of hydrogen projects, as well as support infrastructure.
