Hydrogen in Queensland

Renewable hydrogen is one of the many sustainable fuels we are investigating as part of our pathway to net zero emissions by 2050.

Queensland has reduced more tonnes of emissions than any other state or territory in Australia, achieving a 29% reduction on our 2005 levels—but more than 30% of our emissions are from fuels such as diesel, petrol and aviation fuel.

We are an experienced energy exporter, with abundant renewable energy resources, available land and ideally located ports. We are well-placed to produce enough hydrogen for ourselves and global customers.

Our state’s hydrogen production will:

  • play a critical role in helping us reach our target of 70% renewable energy by 2032, 80% renewable energy by 2035
  • create renewable energy jobs
  • support regional economies
  • open a new export market
  • attract foreign investment.

The International Energy Agency’s Net Zero Roadmap suggests that global total hydrogen demand could reach 150 million tonnes in 2030 and more than 430 million tonnes in 2050.

We have more than 50 renewable hydrogen, ammonia and sustainable fuel projects in various stages of development across Queensland.

Our commitment

We will use our resources, renewable energy experience and our unique attributes to position Queensland as a leading hydrogen producer and exporter.

We will do this by:

  • supporting large scale renewable energy sources for hydrogen
  • securing new manufacturing for the hydrogen supply chain
  • building Queensland’s capability in large scale electrolyser manufacturing
  • supporting Queenslanders to understand the role of renewable hydrogen and the opportunities it will bring to their regions.

We will also work with industry to:

  • attract investment
  • ensure regulations are fit for hydrogen
  • provide clear policies about the use of energy and port assets in Queensland.

What we are doing

In 2019, we released the Queensland Hydrogen Industry Strategy 2019-2024 (PDF, 3.4MB) (the strategy), to grow a sustainable hydrogen industry that supports renewable resources, creates jobs and strengthens our economy.

We have invested more than $300 million as part of its Queensland Hydrogen Industry Strategy to capitalise on emerging domestic and international renewable hydrogen opportunities.

As a deliverable through the strategy, we released the Queensland Hydrogen Investor Toolkit (PDF, 1MB) to assist investors planning to undertake hydrogen project developments in Queensland. The Toolkit, updated in 2024, provides an overview of the planning and information on other regulatory approvals in Queensland.

In October 2022, we released the Enabling Queensland’s hydrogen production and export opportunities report. The report provides a detailed assessment of Queensland’s potential for hydrogen production and export including detailed insights on the opportunities and challenges by region.

The Queensland Government has committed to refreshing the Hydrogen Industry Strategy. The strategy will support the sector’s growth and play a role in the state achieving its renewable energy targets.
